1 99 9 Excitonic ferromagnetism in the hexaborides

چکیده
In a recent letter to Nature Young et al . reported ferromagnetism in Ca1−xLaxB6 — a material with no partially filled dor f -orbitals. Three features are noteworthy, the narrow concentration range of doping (0 ∼ x < ∼ 0.01), the small magnetic moment (∼ 0.07μB/La), and the high Curie temperature (TC ∼ 600 K). The parent compound CaB6 is a poor conductor which shows a small overlap EG (< 0) between a boron-derived valence band and a calcium-derived conduction band at the X-point in the Brillouin zone. The valence and conduction bands belong to different irreducible representations (X ′ 3 and X3, respectively) such that the interband dipole matrix element vanishes at the X-point. As a result the dielectric constant (κ) and the effective masses (mh and me) remain finite as EG → 0, which, as pointed by Halperin and Rice, favors formation of an excitonic condensate.

Excitonic order at strong-coupling: pseudo-spins, doping, and ferromagnetism
A tight binding model is introduced to describe the strong interaction limit of excitonic ordering. At stoichiometry, the model reduces in the strong coupling limit to a pseudo-spin model with approximate U(4) symmetry. Excitonic order appears in the pseudospin model as in-plane pseudo-magnetism. The U(4) symmetry unifies all possible singlet and triplet order parameters describing such states....

Complementary angle-resolved photoemission and bulk-sensitive k-resolved resonant inelastic x-ray scattering of divalent hexaborides reveal a >1 eV X-point gap between the valence and conduction bands, in contradiction to the band overlap assumed in several models of their novel ferromagnetism. This semiconducting gap implies that carriers detected in transport measurements arise from defects, ...

Although predicted theoretically excitonic phase transitions have never been observed. Recently it has been claimed that they can occur in some strongly correlated materials. We study the possibility of an excitonic transition in a two-band model and show that a true phase transition never occurs in the presence of hybridization. We suggest an
متن کاملFerromagnetism below the stoner limit in La-doped SrB6
Spin-polarized band calculations for LaSr7B48 show a weak ferromagnetic state. This is despite a low density of states (DOS) and a low Stoner factor. The reason for the magnetic state is found to be associated with a gain in potential energy in addition to the exchange energy, as a spin splitting is imposed. A DOS with an impuritylike La band is essential for this effect. It makes a correction ...
متن کاملGhost excitonic insulator transition in layered graphite.
Some unusual properties of layered graphite, including a linear energy dependence of the quasiparticle damping and weak ferromagnetism at low doping, are explained as a result of the proximity of a single graphene sheet to the excitonic insulator phase which can be further stabilized in a doped system of many layers stacked in the staggered ( ABAB...) configuration.
